We all have someone who inspires us. Meet the writer, speaker, and overall BEAUTIFUL person, Nola Divine. She has been one of my sources of inspiration for several years. Her zest for life, drive, and awesome personality have truly been a motivation in my life.
Check out my interview with Nola Divine & some of her work below.
Adrienne: Who is Nola Divine?
Nola Divine: The short answer is that I’m a writer, performer and student of Spoken Word and Poetry. But the long story is…I’m still discovering and uncovering Nola Divine! With every book I pick up, every poetry set I attend, I learn more about this art form and also fall more in love with it. As I continue to share my voice and words, God is revealing my place in this creative arena and I’m defining myself as an artist. It’s amazing to me how He continues to give me opportunities to mix my faith with art…the two are actually starting to become synonymous. It’s wonderful!
A: Who or what inspires you?
ND: Nature.Music.Conversations.People.Food.Travel.Exploration.God.Colors.Artists.And did I say music?
A: What do you like most about your natural hair?
ND: Like most women I’ve struggled with self-esteem and feeling pretty over the years, but for the first time I’m in my 20-something years, I feel beautiful! I made the choice to go natural because I wanted healthy, long hair. I had no idea it’d make me feel sexy! And free! It’s also a statement of strength for me. We know being natural is NOT easy. Learning my hair and how to maintain it has required a discipline and commitment that I didn’t realize I had! Everytime I look in the mirror at my curly head I feel so proud!
A: When do you feel you are at your best?
ND: I feel at my best when I’m at peace. When I quiet the noise of life and settle my spirit…focusing on family and friends. Mix that with some good food and a jammin CD and I’ll be glowing!
A: What do you love most about Chicago?
ND: It has been said that Chicago is the pulse of America. That’s arguable, but what isn’t is that this city has a vibrancy and liveliness like none other. And I’ve done a lot of traveling! Whatever your heart desires, Chicago has it. Live music? Check! Beautiful parks and exciting festivals? Check! Professional opportunites, a sizzling social life? Check! Golden summers and white winters? Yep! Art, culture, business, diversity…need I continue?
A: What words of encouragement would you give someone who is attempting to make their dreams a reality?
ND: Two things: 1. Make sure that every step you take is in one that actually gets you closer to your dream. It’s easy to get sidetracked or distracted with other things in life – Going down a road because it looks good at the time; But will it get you to where you’re trying to be? Make decisions that will. 2. Keep your head high when you make mistakes. Messed up? Made the wrong move? It’s cool! Just learn from it and keep it moving. It’s okay to make a mistake, just don’t let it detour you for too long.
