February 3, 2012 marked two years since I BC’d (big chopped)!
These 730 days have literally flown by and I can’t believe my hair has grown as much as it has.
My journey to natural hair began first as a quest for healthy hair. Before becoming natural I struggled, for many years, with a broken and damaged mane.
I felt as if I had tried everything under the sun to “get my hair to grow.” So, naturally, I decided to try the “going natural thing,” as I then called it.
At the time I had no idea that my lack of hair care knowledge and over processing with relaxers was the reason my hair, according to me, “would not grow.”
Now, two years later I see the pitfalls of my hair troubles. But, I am happy to say, if I had the chance to do it all over again, TWA (teeny weeny afro) and all, I would!
Tons of ladies in the natural hair community have said that cutting their hair was a sort of liberation for them. While, I can’t really say that my BC was freeing, I can say it directly attributed to the growth of me.
For some reason, after the cut, I began to see myself in a different light. I gained a sense of confidence that was stronger than what I had before.
Don’t get me wrong, in the beginning adjusting to my hair and comments from others was difficult. However, I truly think that natural hair, for me, speaks to my personality, who I am, who I want to be, the whole kit and caboodle.
Along with “finding Adrienne” so to speak, my natural hair has introduced me to a world I had no idea existed.
I began my blog, and then, all of a sudden I was apart of a community of ladies eager to share and read about hair.
Over these past two years I have met so many people and experienced some wonderful, and not so wonderful (heat damage) things. I wouldn’t trade if all for the world!
If anyone every comes close to me with a relaxer I’m going to do like Phadera (Real Housewives of Atlanta) recently said and “get on my Nikes and run.”
For those of you are are contemplating going natural or are currently transitioning I say to you openly and honestly, the journey will not be easy. However, if you stick to it, it just might be one of the most rewarding things you have ever done!
