Missing In Action: Grown Women | Clutch Magazine

Do you consider yourself to be a “Grown Woman?”

Do you say “I’m GROWN”; putting unnecessary emphasis on the “grown” while, at the same time, popping your neck? :)   If not, I’m sure you know someone who does.

Check out Clutch Magazine’s recent article Missing In Action: Grown Women |

Everyone who claims to be a “grown woman” just might not fit the mold. What do you think?

Whiskey Park Atlanta

Good Times!: Don’t Be Afraid to Say "Hello"

W Atlanta Midtown’s Whiskey Park hosted a “Gemini Bash” on Friday, June 18th. I was in the mood to mingle, as I often am, so I went with my friend, and publicist extraordinaire, Ashlee.

The atmosphere was great, and the drinks were pretty tasty. Here are some pictures from the evening.

There is nothing I enjoy more than meeting new people. According to my significant other I will “talk to a brick wall.” He’s right; I’m definitely not afraid to spark up a conversation with a complete stranger.

Natural Hairstyle

What a Weekend: It’s All About Hair!

So far, my weekend has been all about hair; but, it’s been sprinkled with tons of fun! I started it off by attending a “Gemini Party” at W Atlanta Midtown’s Whiskey Park.  I met up with some old friends and left with new acquaintances. The atmosphere was great and the drinks were too. Of course, while we sipped we talked hair.

Today I headed downtown to the Biltmore Hotel for the Ultimate Fashionista Event sponsored by ESSENCE and Dark & Lovely.  I also stopped by Urbanbella’s Curl Talk & Tea with Shelley Davis. Needless to say, it’s been a long day.

Be Thankful

"Overcome With Thankfulness!"

I listen to the Rickey Smiley Morning Show on my way to work almost every day. I usually miss his morning “Praise Break.” But, yesterday, because I forgot to set my alarm, I was running 10 minutes behind schedule.  Fortunately, I was able to catch some of the segment.

As the gospel song ended Rickey Smiley spoke. He began to give thanks for the “little things”; the ability to taste food, paper plates, plastic utensils; you know, things we normally overlook.  While pulling into the parking deck of my office building I began to think about how far I have come in my life. I too became overcome with thankfulness.

“Don’t I Know You?"

As I walked out of Atlanta Beauty Depot, my favorite beauty supply store, a man sitting on the curb said to me, “Don’t I know you?” Before I go any further let me say this; there is nothing wrong with a man sparking a conversation with a woman he finds attractive. However, seeing that I had never met this man before in my life; his question was not only odd; it was an extremely poor excuse for a conversation starter.

Glad You Have Natural hair

“I’m So Glad You Have Natural Hair…!”

We were riding in silence, with the windows down,  listening to ESPN on XM Radio; my significant other wouldn’t dare miss a second of the NBA Finals. I was thinking about how much I was going to enjoy the burrito bowl we had just picked up from Chipotle when, all of a sudden, I felt this warm feeling on the side of my face. Not warm as if I had been mildly burned but, warm as if my boyfriend was sitting in the driver seat staring at me. Before I could turn to say, “what are you looking at”, he said, in an unnecessarily loud but cheerful voice, “I’m so glad you have natural hair, now I can roll my windows down.” Sadly, before that moment, I had no idea letting the windows down in his car was an “issue” in our relationship.

Where's My Dream Job

Where’s My Dream Job?

“Where the manager at?” I was asked this by an over zealous customer attempting to return a shirt she obviously wore. As I was the manager at this retail store, I proceeded to discuss with this customer why she could not return this, clearly worn to the club, smelling like smoke, shirt. It was at that moment, mid one of my condescending comments, that I thought…where’s my dream job?

OH NO SHE DIDN’T!?

“Ummm, yes she did! Yes, this lady just put her hands in my hair!”

I found myself thinking the above as a woman, I did not know from a can of paint, grabbed two fistfuls of my hair. No, she did not ask permission. No, I did not offer. Yes, she just dived right in.

Is there something about natural hair that makes people lose all sense of reason and etiquette? Do I need to wear a sign that says, “Please ask permission before touching my hair?”

Blogging?:“I’m From the Old School”

After telling my mother I decided to start a blog about my hair & life she said, “Why don’t you get a journal…you know I’m from the old school.”

Fighting back laughter, I attempted to explain to my mother the difference between a blog and a journal. Poor me, before I could get my explanation out she said, “Adrienne, I know what a blog is; we read them all the time at work.” Her comment was not in response to blogging but to the possibility of me sharing personal information with people I don’t know.
