Cantu Shea Butter Oil Sheen

Oil Sheen? What Am I Supposed to Do With This?

During my relaxed days oil sheen was a huge staple in my hair care arsenal. A day wouldn’t go by without me creating a cloud of shine, before I walked out of the door, around my head.

Now that I have natural hair, the one can of oil sheen I have has been placed in deep dark part of my hair cabinet, never to be seen or used again.

At this point I’m a little perplexed by what I should do with it? :)

Box Braids on Natural Hair

Guess Who Got Their Box Braids!?

Last week I shared with you all my longing for a much needed hair break. I had a strong interest in, traveling back in “hair time” to get some 1993 Poetic Justice-ish braids.

Well, It’s official! I’m all braided up, *does cabbage patch*, and I am LOVING IT!

So, how and where was this done? Well, on Sunday evening I stopped by the beauty supply store and, with the help of Lexi, (I wasn’t sure what colored I needed) picked up 6 packs of Kanekalon Synthetic Braiding Hair.

Flat Twist Out with Take Command Curl Defining Creme

Yesterday’s Hair: Flat Twist Out with Curls Unleashed Take Command

Yesterday I sported one of my signature looks, a flat twist out.

Since my big chop in 2010, flat twist outs have been my go-to for defined & stretched hair.

I love the style plus, with a little re-twisting in the evening, a twist out can last for quite some time.

Normally, when flat twisting my hair, I use a mixture of conditioner, EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) and a little aloe vera gel. But for this style I pulled out Curls Unleashed new Take Command Curl Defining Creme.

Top Knot Bun on Straightened Natural Hair

Yesterday’s Hair: Top Knot

I’ve always admired the look of a messy bun positioned on the top of a nicely dressed women’s head.

There is something about a “top knot” that I find wildly chic. To me it says, “I’m polished but, I don’t’ take myself too seriously.”

Ok, I may be reading a little too much into this hairstyle, but since my mane is currently straight I thought I would give the top knot a try.

Natural Hair Coloring at Too Groovy Salon in Atlanta

The Big Reveal…My New Hair Color!

On Sunday, February 12th I made my way to Too Groovy Salon in midtown Atlanta to have my hair colored by Too Groovy’s founder & owner Robin Groover!

Before Robin jumped into coloring my hair she and I sat down and discussed the current condition of my mane.

We chatted about some of my challenges (dryness) and overall hair goals. After doing so we then talked about what my vision was for my “new look.”

Flat Three Strand Twist Out

Yesterday’s Hair: 30 Minutes Under the Dryer Just Doesn’t Cut It!

Tuesday night I took an hour and a half out of my self allotted “tv time” to wash and style my hair. I wanted to give any old style a try so I decided on three strand flat twist.

It had been a while since I flat twisted my hair so I was eager to get it done and see my results.

I used the same products and twisting techniques as I had before so I knew nothing could go wrong. I was completely incorrect.

Natural Hair Updo

Yesterday’s Hair: Updo Circa 1992

After wearing my hair in fuzzy two strand twist the majority of the holiday, (I was super lazy and didn’t feel like doing much of anything) I decided I was in much need of a decent hairstyle. Plus, I needed to go to the grocery store and for the life of me could not find my hat. :)

So, without a style in mind, I untwisted my hair and pulled out my stash of bobby pins.

Holiday Makeover with Design Essentials

Straight Hair!: My Holiday Makeover by Design Essentials

On December 6th I was the excited recipient of a Holiday Makeover courtesy of Design Essentials!

I anxiously made my way to DE’s Atlanta research lab that Monday afternoon to have my hair “beautified” by a member of the Design Essentials team.

Upon entry into Design Essentials office I was pleasantly greeted and then escorted through the building to a full service salon.

To begin my makeover, stylist, and Design Essentials Educator, Francesa Adams, surveyed my hair asked me a few questions about my maintenance routine and then immediately go to work.

Blown Out Two Strand Twist Out

Big & Fluffy: Blown Out Two Stand Twists

I have always been a fan of big natural hair. Inspired by Natural Chica, and her unbelievably fabulous blowouts, I decided to give stretching my own kinks & coils a try.

After shampooing & deep conditioning I placed my wet hair into small two-inch sections.

Using a handheld blow dryer, on medium heat, I dried each section. To protect from potential heat damage I used Optimum Care Heat Protection Polisher.

Once my hair was straightened to my liking, I didn’t want it bone straight – just stretched, I placed it into small two strand twists and added a perm rod on the end.

Natural Hair Puff

Yesterday’s Hair: “Mega Puff”

As time progresses my hair continues to grow, and, so does my puff.

I love big hair. But, I found myself in a state of awe when I gazed upon the monstrous ball I sported on the top of my head yesterday.

This weekend I blew out my hair, to style it for a blown out twist-out (photos coming soon). Well, hours later I decided to pull my hair into a puff.
